Mike Matusow

Mike Matusow worked in his family’s furniture store before becoming a professional poker player.

Matusow started with video poker at the age of 18. He played so frequently the he suffered from repetitive strain injury in his shoulders and arms. Matusow learned Texas hold’em in 1989. Early in his career, he won 81 out of 82 sessions and won $250,000. He also worked as a poker dealer. After countless hours turning cards and analyzing hands, he started playing for himself. He honed his skills playing late-night games at Sam's Town Casino in Las Vegas and, after achieving some success, decided to play full time.

Matusow earned his first World Series of Poker bracelet in 1999 and his second in 2002. He had another strong showin at the 2005 WSOP, finishing ninth in the Main Event and cashing for $1 million. Shortly thereafter, he followed up his Main Event performance by winning the 2005 WSOP Tournament of Champions and earning his second million-dollar payday of the year.

In 2006, Mike finished second in the No-Limit Hold 'em event at the Las Vegas "FullTiltPoker.Net Pro Showdown from Red Rock Casino," and three days later he finished third in the No-Limit Hold 'em event at the Tournament of Champions, also in Las Vegas. Just a month later, Mike had a final table appearance in the $2,500 No-Limit Hold 'em event at the 2006 WSOP, where he finished seventh and cashed for almost $90,000.

In October 2004, Matusow made his first World Poker Tour (WPT) final table at the UltimateBet Aruba Classic, earned $250,000 for 3rd place. In 2006, he finished runner-up in the WPT Bad Boys of Poker II in heads-up play.

Matusow appeared in Poker Superstars III, where he made it to the Elite Eight. In the winner-take-all championship match, Matusow beat 7 other top players to win $500,000. He also appeared in the second season of High Stakes Poker.

In early 2007, Matusow appeared on two episodes of Poker After Dark where he finished 3rd and 2nd respectively.

As of 2006, his total live tournament winnings exceed $4,190,000.
